New Lanark has a fascinating history:
Founded in 1785 by factory owner Richard Arkwright and philanthropist David Dale, who sought to improve working conditions by offering clean housing and education to children (taken from the poor houses of Glasgow and Edinburgh and offered employment and education at New Lanark)
A considerable portion of Dale's early workforce were Highlanders who had been displaced by the Highland Clearances.
The mills at New Lanark passed in 1800 to his son in law, Robert Owen.
Owen reduced working hours, stopped children under the age of 10 from going to work, introducing a company doctor, savings bank and a village store.
At this time, New Lanark was the most successful Mill in Britain
Today, the New Lanark Spinning Company spins woollen yarn on our 19th Century machinery which is powered by our hydro-electric turbine to keep our environmental impact to a minimum.
They specialise in producing high quality woollen yarns for Hand Knitting, Hosiery and also the Weaving Trade.
Accredited members of the Soil Association for our Organic Wool.
The mills and village are a major tourist attraction beside the River Clyde and have a Visitor Centre, 4 star hotel, holiday flats, restaurants and shops.
